Notes from Mary.
‘ Traditionally May is always a busy time for gardeners and this May has been no exception.
A lovely group of members turned out for the RHS Malvern Festival volunteering to run one of the plant creches for two days. The work was busy and rather warm but ultimately good fun and resulted in raising nearly £900 for club funds (and some very tired feet!)
The next weekend was an interesting talk by Paul Williams on the Solanaceae family of plants ( deadly nightshade….) and our garden market. Plants were brought and sold and thank you for the cakes and preserves donated to sell. Again, all monies raised go to club funds.
On the following Thursday, 3 teams of club members took part in the fun gardening quiz hosted by Martley Garden Club. One of our teams won, not perhaps because we were the most knowledgeable gardeners, but because we know our veggies and are dab hands at anagrams! The bottles of wine won will not go to club funds, sorry!
So, a busy month, and now looking forward to our garden visits and a day in Wells.
Happy gardening!’
Rare Plant Fair Newsletter June 2024
It’s hard to believe that June is already upon us – where has the first half of the year gone? Our garden seems to have exploded with colour in the last few weeks, with iris, paeonies, geraniums and many more all bursting into flower. Our title photo shows just a few of the beautiful flowers out in our own garden at the moment. You can be sure that our nursery stands will have plenty more beautiful, interesting and unusual plants available at our June events for you to take home for your own gardens!
We have two brilliant Fairs for you this month. The first is at High Glanau Manor, near Monmouth in South Wales, on Sunday, June 2nd. These gardens are set in a truly breathtaking location just outside Monmouth with stunning views over the Usk Valley to the Black Mountains, and the superb Arts and Crafts garden has been lovingly restored by owners Helena and Hilary Gerrish. Within an hour’s drive of Bristol, Cardiff, Gloucester and Hereford, these wonderful gardens are well worth a visit.
Our second Fair is at Waterperry Gardens, near Oxford, on Sunday, June 9th. These iconic, 8-acre gardens date back to the 1930s when the estate was home to Beatrix Havergal’s famous School of Horticulture for Women, and the ornamental gardens include a wealth of beautiful features, including the famous 200ft herbaceous border that is just amazing in June. The gardens are close to Oxford, and easily accessed from the M40 and just over an hour’s drive from central London.
As ever, we have a great selection of specialist nurseries attending the Fairs, including a number of National Collection holders, all of whom are experts in the plants that they grow. There will be a wide range of interesting and unusual plants for sale, including choice perennials; plants for shade; cacti, succulents and house plants; alpines; native wildflowers; and a great selection of unusual shrubs, all accompanied by the expert advice that you need to select and grow the right plants for your garden. There are also selected suppliers of top quality gardening products at some Fairs.
We also have two fantastic Fairs this year coming up in July – there will be more details in our July newsletter but we’ve listed the dates below (click on the fair name to get full event information) – make a note of them in your diaries!
Our Fairs
There’s no need to buy your tickets for our Fairs in advance – simply turn up and pay on the gate. However, advanced booking is available for our Fair at Waterperry Gardens. Many of our nurseries can offer the option of contactless card payments, so please make use of this wherever you can. However, card machines can be at the mercy of temperamental mobile phone signals in rural locations, and also not all stallholders have card facilities, so please bring plenty of cash with you as well.
In order to reduce plastic waste, we are trying to encourage the use of reusable bags and boxes for transporting your purchases, so if you can, please bring your own bags or boxes. But if you can’t, don’t worry; our stallholders will still be happy to provide bags and help you with your packing.
