September 2018

Members of the Black Pear Gardening Club met in Powick Parish Hall on Saturday 15th September and were treated to an entertaining and visually compelling slide show by former Chairman Brian Skeys. EnCtled “Gardens of Madeira and the 2013 Flower FesCval”, Brian gave us a flavour of the famous Botanical gardens and showed us some fine examples of bananas, tree ferns, pagodas, Chinese warriors, stone lanterns, waterfalls, amaryllis, clivias, and euphorbias.

Within these gardens there is also a secCon on 15th to 20th century Portugese porcelain plus a modern art exhibiCon, and these were captured with great skill by Brian. Next followed the Palheiro Gardens, owned by the Blandy family of Madeira wine fame. These gardens featured magnificent topiary, succulents and a wonderful rose garden.

Other gardens visited featured orchids and agapanthus were much in evidence as were the Jacaranda trees which were in full bloom . Also enjoyed was the Annual flower fesCval, which included dozens of floats with magnificent floral decoraCons. Brian is a giVed and enthusiasCc photographer and members were enchanted with his floral interpretaCons.
